The "flight or fight" scenario is only meant to be a very short term event. One can see that long term exposure to this situation will have very adverse effects on the body. Yoga can change that.<br />

In nature, the countermeasure for "fight or flight" is known as the "relaxation response" or parasympathetic nervous system. The main nerves of the parasympathetic system are the tenth cranial nerves, or the vagus nerves. They originate in the medulla oblongata. Parasympathetic stimulation causes a slowing down of the heartbeat, lowering of blood pressure, increased blood flow to the skin and viscera, and peristalsis of the GI tract - the exact opposite of "fight or Flight" symptoms. Yoga induces this response by teaching the pupil to breathe deeply and relax muscles. The benefit of yoga is clear. The body recovers faster, and the harmful effects of stress are reduced.<br />
<br />
Yoga subscribes to the theory that by using breathing and relaxation techniques, the harmful effects of stress on the body can be eliminated, or at the very least greatly reduced. Through meditation and calming of the spirit, yoga teaches us to face the situation of "fight or flight" from a threat to a challenge. One is able through practice to focus on finding a solution, rather than creating an immediate response to the stimuli. One learns to be proactive, and take care of the stressors in their lives.<br />
<br />
The benefit of yoga is undeniable. By utilizing the techniques of this ancient practice, anyone can achieve the balance and harmony so needed in their lives. Can Praise Be Harmful to Children?

<p class="articletext">It seems like it is common wisdom to praise our kids for things like their athletic skills, musical ability, intelligence, creativity, talent, and so on. We want them to internalize all of our praise and have high self-esteem, right? Interestingly, the research does not bear this out. Praising kids for things that are not directly under their control, like intelligence, can backfire.<br />
<br />

Sure, we can improve our cognitive abilities (to a fairly large extent) through our efforts. Research in neuroscience has shown that the brain is remarkably plastic -But when we praise our kids with statements such as "Wow! You are SO smart!", we are not praising their efforts. We are praising an attribute as if it were a quality that is etched in stone.<br />
<br />
Praise children for their effort. <br />
<br />
Psychologists have devised a number of ingenious experiments to test the idea that praising kids for attributes such as intelligence helps them have high self-esteem. The idea is that having high self-esteem can help children to persevere when they encounter challenges. What researchers are finding is that when kids are praised as being "smart" they are more likely to give up when encountering challenges. The psychologists hypothesize that such children are faced with a dilemma when they encounter these challenges. They say to themselves, "If I'm so smart, why am I having difficulties with this?" Rather than relinquishing the idea that they are smart, these children often give up more quickly. In essence, they are trying to protect their ego.<br />
<br />
In contrast, effort is something that is more directly under our control. Children who are praised for their effort and perseverance tend to want to keep working when they encounter challenges. The praise reinforces the children's efforts and, because there are more likely to keep working on challenging tasks, these children also are more likely to experience success on difficult tasks. In effect, they get two rewards – the praise from the adult and the reward of completing a challenging task.<br />
<br />
Ironically, children praised for their intelligence and other attributes (e.g., athletic ability, musical talent) with the goal of trying to increase their self-esteem are more likely to give up, which undermines their self-esteem. So, try to focus on praising your children's efforts rather than trying to bolster their self-esteem through just telling them how smart or athletic they are. This helps them to learn to focus their energy on what they can most directly control…their effort.<br />

Be specific about the praise you give your children. <br />

Often we assume that, when we say "good job," little Billy knows to what we are referring. Billy might not have a clue. For example, if you exclaim "Wonderful job!" to Billy after he finishes a soccer game, how is he to know what you are talking about? Is it because he tried hard? Is it because he demonstrated good sportsmanship by helping an injured player? Is it because he passed the ball a lot to his teammates? If you are praising Billy in hopes that it encourages him to do more of that action in the next game, he needs to know what you mean.<br />
<br />
Imagine if the performance review from your boss consisted of the words "GOOD JOB!" scrawled across the page. How helpful…or rewarding…would that be? Praise should provide some specific information that allows children to know exactly what they are doing well so they can choose to do more of that behavior the next time. Generic praise, in addition to not being informative, becomes very bland and children begin to lose interest in what you are saying. Again, imagine if your boss praised you in the exact same way every time…and used that same praise with everyone else. After a while, you would probably tune him/her out.<br />
<br />
Help kids know what they are doing right by being specific in your use of praise. Ensure that you have variety as well. Use hand signals, pats on the back, different wording, various vocal inflections, and so on. This will allow kids the ability to use the information that you convey more effectively. Remember, it doesn't guarantee that they do what you want, but at least they have what they need to make a more informed choice about their behavior.<br />

Use the "principle of opposites".<br />
<br />
What is the most annoying behavior of your child? Does he frequently interrupt you? Does she have trouble complying with directions? What ever behavior it is, find its opposite…that's the one that you really want to see more of anyway. Instead of giving most of your attention to a particular behavior of your child that annoys you, you "catch him" behaving well in the opposite area. Then, give him specific praise. "Billy, I really appreciate how you put away your toys right when I asked." Remember, don't just say "good job" when Billy puts his toys away…that's not specific enough.<br />
<br />
This takes practice – you will be breaking your old habit of repeatedly attending to your child's negative behavior. Maybe even put a post-it note on your bathroom mirror to remind yourself. Enlist your significant other's support and help each other out so you can create a new habit. You'll find that you're much less negative toward your child AND it is likely that your child's behavior will improve in that area that has been so troublesome.</p>

Most of us grew up hearing these falsehoods in our communities, churches, and families.  In our struggle for equality, we sometimes find ourselves trying to convince family members, co-workers, clergy, and lawmakers that our relationships are just as healthy and resilient as those of our heterosexual friends.  But what if research suggested they are, in some ways .  .  . even healthier?<br />
<br />

Psychologists and relationship researchers Dr. John Gottman from the University of Washington, and Dr. Robert Levenson from the University of California at Berkeley, conducted a twelve-year study of same-sex and opposite-sex couples.  Among other things, they found that gay and lesbian couples are more upbeat in the face of conflict and use less controlling and hostile emotional tactics during an argument (Gottman Relationship Institute, 2003).<br />
<br />
A study published in the Journal of Developmental Psychology found that gays and lesbians in committed relationships resolve conflict better than heterosexual couples who are dating, and that lesbian couples are especially effective at resolving problems harmoniously (Roisman et al., 2008).  Another study, published in the same journal, compared gay couples, lesbian couples, and heterosexual married couples in Vermont over a three-year period.  In that study, same-sex couples were found to be similar to heterosexual couples on most variables, but reported more positive feelings, more satisfaction, and less conflict than heterosexual married couples (Balsam et al., 2008).  These findings supported earlier studies showing that lesbian couples tend to be emotionally closer than gay male couples who, in turn, tend to be emotionally closer than heterosexual married couples. Qualities of closeness and flexibility were found in 79% of lesbian couples, 56% of gay male couples, and 8% of heterosexual married couples (Green, Bettinger, & Zacks, 1996).<br />
<br />
Finally, sociologists Dr. Judith Stacey from New York University, and Dr. Timothy Biblarz from the University of California, reported on their five-year review of 81 studies comparing a variety of family configurations; including heterosexual, lesbian, and gay households.  The results, published in the February 2010 issue of the Journal of Marriage and Family, revealed that the quality of the parent's relationship and parenting style are more important than their gender.  In fact, the research suggests that two women raising a child together tend to be slightly more committed to active hands-on parenting than heterosexual parents (Biblarz & Stacey, 2010).<br />
<br />
The next time you find yourself, or someone else, doubting your ability to love your partner or a child because of your sexual orientation, remember these words from Gottman:<br />

As it would seem, our beliefs greatly determine our actions and outcomes.  Author Anais Nin once said, "We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are." The flip side of this is don't become a Facebook stalker. Don't "poke" people all the time. If you keep "liking" everything someone does and commenting on their every post, they aren't going to think you're the best friend they ever had. They're going to think that they will see you staring into their bedroom window one day and that's what gets you quietly removed from friends lists.<br />

The time of my life when Pac-Man made his debut was filled with excitement and a little chaos, being a military brat and re-locating to a foreign country, and the one thing that tied me to home was the Pac-Man video game in the commissary cafeteria. <br />

When Atari hit the market, home video game systems became affordable and popular, and Pac-Man was the game to play. I remember competitive evenings with my father, out-scoring each other at every opportunity, watching, learning, and gaining new skills. I remember hearing the term "Atari Thumb" when my father complained to his doctor about sore hands (interestingly enough, not so long after that he was diagnosed with "Nintendo Thumbs". I love my father.). <br />

I think almost everybody from my generation (that would be Generation X) has some kind of memory about Pac-Man.
